Endangered tortoise named Nigrita becomes a mom for the first time at 80 years old

Nigrita is an 80-year-old turtle living in the Zurich Zoo in Switzerland. The turtle had 9 eggs at this age and no one was surprised.

Giant tortoises are one of the longest-living vertebrates in the world. They can live up to 152 years. So to have eggs at the age of 80 is a quite normal thing.

They live so long as their metabolism is very slow and they have large water reserves. It means that they can live without water and food for a very long time.

However, these calm creatures are endangered as they were hunted by pirates and merchants for various reasons. Both their meat and their shells were massively used. And now everything is done in the Zurich Zoo to keep this wonderful mother and her babies.
