Three-month-old giraffe calf gets a new lease on life after receiving custom braces to fix legs

According to a press release from the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, the female calf, named Msituni, was born with the hyperextension of the carpi, causing her front legs to bend improperly. Because of this, the poor animal had some difficulties with walking until the little giraffe was given leg braces.

If the little giraffe had lived in the wild without any help she would probably die as with such legs it was very hard to survive. So vets at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park collaborated with orthotics from the Hanger Clinic to fix the problem.

Though the Hanger clinic usually welcomes human patients this tim ethe little girafe is there to be healed. And the vets gave her a second chance. Soon Msituni made such strides that the leg braces have now been removed, and she no longer requires antibiotics. And the most important she’s rejoined the herd in the park’s giraffe habitat.

It was a great success fro both the vets and the Safari Park staff to hear such news. The tallest animals in the world should have strong legs to keep their long necks firmly.
